Older-generation machines with robust structures, powerful hydraulic systems, and high adaptability continue to be trusted by many contractors to this day.
The DH608-120M hydraulic pile driving machine is a typical example. Although manufactured in 1990, this model is still widely used on construction sites thanks to its stable performance, large load capacity, and suitability for driving large-diameter bored piles and driven piles under complex geological conditions.
In this article, Hanoi Vietnam provides an in-depth analysis of the technical aspects, real-world performance, operating costs, and comparisons with other pile driving machines, helping engineers and investors make informed decisions. The content focuses on configuration, operating principles, application capabilities, and practical experience using the DH608-120M hydraulic pile driving machine in foundation construction projects in Vietnam.
Overall Configuration and Technical Specifications of the DH608-120M Hydraulic Pile Driving Machine
The DH608-120M belongs to the heavy-duty foundation equipment category, designed under the philosophy of “durability – stability – versatility,” making it suitable for projects requiring high load capacity and precise execution.
Structurally, the machine has a total operating weight of up to 120 tons, generating substantial self-weight pressure to ensure stability when handling long piles, large-diameter piles, or operating high-capacity hydraulic hammers. The 30-meter leader allows deep pile installation, well-suited for projects with thick weak soil layers or deep foundation requirements.
Crawler dimensions are a critical factor for foundation equipment. The DH608-120M features a 4.5 m wide crawler and a 5.76 m crawler length, enabling even load distribution on soft ground and minimizing settlement or tilting during operation on weak soils such as mud, soft clay, or water-saturated ground. The overall machine height of approximately 7.0 m is optimally calculated to ensure operational reach while remaining practical for transportation and on-site assembly.
The diesel engine delivers 185 PS at 2,000 rpm, paired with a 250-liter fuel tank, allowing extended continuous operation without frequent refueling. A travel speed of 0.8 km/h—though modest—is entirely appropriate for foundation machinery, where stability takes precedence over speed.

Overall, this configuration clearly shows that the DH608-120M is not designed for fast movement like an excavator, but rather to stand firm – lift heavy – operate precisely in pile driving and bored piling operations.
Full Hydraulic System and Operating Principles of the DH608-120M
The core value of the DH608-120M lies in its fully hydraulic system, purpose-built for heavy foundation work. Unlike hybrid mechanical–hydraulic machines, the fully hydraulic design enables smooth, precise, and easily controlled operation—especially important for tasks requiring fine adjustments such as pile alignment and hammer positioning.
The hydraulic system controls nearly all major functions: raising and lowering the leader, winch drum operation, hydraulic hammer operation, and support for hydraulic auger drilling. This allows the machine to flexibly switch between construction methods such as precast concrete pile driving, steel pile pressing, pilot drilling, and bored piling.
A notable feature is the micro-speed control mode. This highly valuable function allows site engineers to precisely align pile centers, adjust leader verticality, and gently seat the hammer onto pile heads—minimizing errors, reducing pile damage risk, and enhancing jobsite safety.
Compared with many high-cost modern machines, the DH608-120M may lack advanced digital displays, but it excels in hydraulic stability, low failure rates, ease of repair, and suitability for continuous operation in Vietnam—where maintenance practicality, spare parts availability, and mechanic skill are critical factors.
Powerful Winch System and High Adaptability to Project Requirements
One of the DH608-120M’s greatest advantages is its high-capacity, multi-drum winch system. The machine is equipped with essential winches for professional foundation work, including the main drum, sub drum, leader drum, and an optional fourth drum.
Thanks to its large drum design, the machine can accommodate cable lengths ranging from 130 m to 530 m, depending on cable diameter. This provides exceptional flexibility for contractors working with various pile types—from short piles in urban areas to deep piles for ports, high-rise buildings, and industrial yards.
In practice, the powerful winch system allows smooth operation of heavy hydraulic hammers and large-diameter augers without power loss or vibration. This is particularly critical when working on weak soils, where even minor instability can cause pile misalignment or compromise overall machine stability.
The winch system’s adaptability enables the DH608-120M to support multiple construction methods, from traditional pile driving to combined drilling-and-driving techniques. For large projects, this flexibility reduces the number of machines required, optimizing costs and site logistics.
Pile Installation Capacity and Practical Application Scope of the DH608-120M
In terms of pile installation capacity, the DH608-120M is not limited to a single fixed configuration. The machine offers multiple operating modes depending on hammer type, pile diameter, pile length, and specific load requirements of each project.
When equipped with a hydraulic hammer, it can install concrete piles, steel piles, or pipe piles with large diameters, delivering stable driving force and precise control of final set. In drilling mode, the machine supports hydraulic augers, enabling pilot drilling or bored piling prior to pile installation—particularly effective in hard strata, gravel layers, or mixed soil-rock conditions.
In practice, the DH608-120M is commonly used for:
- Bridge and roadway projects requiring deep foundation treatment and high-load piles.
- Port and inland waterway facilities with long piles installed in soft muddy ground.
- Factories and industrial parks with heavy structural loads demanding long-term foundation stability.
The machine’s strength lies not only in its ability to handle heavy-duty tasks, but also in its precision and long-term durability—qualities highly valued by contractors when compared with lighter, newer-generation machines.
Operating Costs, Maintenance, and Investment Value Assessment
A common question among investors is whether a machine manufactured in 1990 like the DH608-120M remains economically viable. The answer largely depends on how one evaluates long-term investment value.
In reality, the initial purchase cost of the DH608-120M is significantly lower than that of modern hydraulic pile drivers. Meanwhile, operating costs remain reasonable thanks to a straightforward diesel engine, moderate fuel consumption, and a hydraulic system that is easy to maintain.
Spare parts for machines of this generation are still widely available, especially in Asian markets. With an experienced maintenance team, routine servicing—such as seal replacement, hydraulic pump inspection, or winch maintenance—is relatively simple. This minimizes downtime and helps ensure construction schedules are met.
For foundation contractors, owning a DH608-120M means having a reliable “backbone machine” capable of handling heavy foundation tasks, thereby strengthening competitiveness in bidding for major projects.
